Title: Mar; Empty Faces

Year: 2017

Description: Mar: Empty Faces is a representation of the long journey of the Syrian refugees. People who had to leave behind their homes, belongings, jobs and parts of their family, to escape from war. We do not see their faces, because only numbers seem to matter. We do not want to see their faces, yes because that makes it easier to shut the door on them. Their long journey is one to claim their humanity back.

Title: Into The Light

Year: 2016 – 2018

Description: Inspired by ancient world maps of Chinese explorers, lands and continents, Marcus Neusletter draws on past and future trade routes and maps that inform our perspective and understanding of other places and cultures. He creates large scale drawings with Chinese products such as glow-sticks in public space and then repurposes them into artworks that reflect on the African relationship with this global power.

Description: Newspaper Carries the most important information, it also, when you step back and view it with perspective represents a culture. Yet inherent in it its nature is its dispensable-ness. We are becoming more and more aware of how subjective it is though. Who writes. Aspecific person opinion is there with strength. Fernandez takes a large South African voting queue from the time of Mandela and glorifies the down to earth subjects. Then in a deeper look at voting, she manages to stream many cultures into one queue that flows with people from nations that vote. This work holds the concept of fairness in its curtain-like structure the individual rods alludes to parts that make up the whole picture – mimicking voting. Mandela – a major theme in the past century. How he managed to personify moving from one place to another was like stepping through a magic curtain. Who knew that one person could transcend the physical space they were allocated so vastly in their lifetime carrying a nation into the impossible reality of our democracy. The whole world pandered to his way, like never before a leader forced peace.

Title: Shape of the Impact, cyanotypes (sun prints)
Year: 2016-2017
Description: Two billion years ago; a meteor the size of a mountain collided with the earth. It hit just south of Johannesburg, near present-day Parys. The intense impact formed a massive crater, rippling the earth for miles in all direction. This is the Vredefort Dome- the largest crater in the world. It cannot be recognised when is standing on the ground; only from the air can the entirety of the crater be discerned. Nina Barnett’s work “The shape of the impact”renders the crater using cyanotype, a photographic print made using the sub. Light rays arriving on earth echo the movement of the meteor, from deep space into our atmosphere, sky, and ground.
